Produced by the South African Mint, the Krugerrand’s name stems from Paul Kruger, the president of the South African Republic, and the rand, South Africa’s unit of currency. First issued in 1967, the Krugerrand was the first national bullion coin to ever be produced. In 1980, the South African Mint introduced three smaller coins in denominations containing a 1/2 troy ounce, a 1/4 troy ounce, and a 1/10 ounce of gold.
